Anxiety
We all need some level of stress in our life’s. Our flight or fight response allows us to be aware of dangers that we may face and as a result protects us.
But what happens when this response is heightened? We inevitably become overanxious and stressed by events or circumstances that normally would not evoke such a strong reaction.
Physical symptoms may include
Low energy
Insomnia
Loss of appetite
Upset stomach
Low mood
Increased heart rate
And so many more……
Stress causes dis-ease within the body. Over time stress and anxiety have a detrimental effect on our health.
Social Anxiety
Social anxiety, a fear of social situations, from ordering a take out coffee or being at a party or social gathering can have a crippling affect on an individual too, and as we slowly start opening society back up after the Covid 19 restrictions it is inevitable that numbers of people struggling with day to day social tasks are set to rise.
"I don’t think people understand how difficult it is to explain what’s going on in your head when you don’t even understand it yourself"
- Unknown
Remember that we do not owe anyone an explanation of why you feel the way that you do. You do not have to justify yourself to anyone but yourself.
How can we help ourselves?
Feeling anxious about our anxiety is normal but how can we help ourselves take back control. Breathing techniques are a great way of calming you and relaxing the body. Also, by concentrating on your breathe you are not focusing on the anxiety!
Try the 4-7-8 system…… breathe in for 4 seconds, holding the breath for 7 seconds and exhale for 8 seconds. Use this anytime you feel overwhelmed with anxiety, and it is also good to use as you try to sleep.
I’m a big fan of writing down your thoughts. Your worries often seem bigger in your head, spinning round and round leading to a feeling of being out of control. By writing them own in list form you have firstly, removed them from your internal chatter and secondly, when you read it back often your worries will appear less daunting.
Triggers
It is helpful if you recognise what your anxiety triggers are. Common ones include stressful work environment, chronic pain and phobias. Seek professional support if you feel unable to control your anxiety on your own.
